Summer a Time of Caution for your Eyes

Eye care health is always important. With the upcoming summer season, now  is the time to consider the dangers of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation
especially on your eyes. As it affects your skin, UV can also affect your eyes. Precautions should be taken when being exposed to it. Most people realize that UV radiation comes primarily from the sun. It is important to remember that there are some man made devices that emit it as well,  for example tanning beds and lasers.

I am sure that many of us have had a sunburn before, especially if we did not use proper sunscreen.
Photokeratitis is like a sunburn on the eyes and may be painful.  Some common temporary symptoms are sensitivity to light, red eyes, tearing and a gritty feeling in the eyes.
The retina is the lining inside the eye that we use to see.  Damage to it from UV is the biggest concern.  Even small exposure over a longer period of time increases the chance of macular degeneration later in life.   Just like our skin, the more protection we can give ourselves the less likely we are to develop difficulties.
What can be done?

Sunglasses that offer UV protection are also an excellent way to ensure retina safety. Available today are impact resistant sunglasses. Many are made from polycarbonate and can offer adequate UV protection.   Simple things like wearing a hat or cap when outside for prolonged periods of time are a great benefit too. Make sure that the hat has a wide brim to help shield your eyes.Wrap around frames are an excellent too, as they will help shield the eyes more.
Since children and teen are going to be outdoors more this summer, make sure they have eye protection as well.
If you have any questions or additional concerns about UV eye protection contact your a doctor of optometry. Always get your eyes checked on a regular basis at least once a year. That way you can ensure the best vision care for  your family. Clear vision comes from healthy eyes.
